Late Model Welte-Mignon Upright With Suction Box
By Tim Gautreaux
Hi all, I've been looking for a Welte Licensee upright within
"driving distance" of western North Carolina. If someone knows of
one, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
I located one, but it's unlike any I've rebuilt. It has a vacuum
"box" instead of a rotary 4-bellows pump, and all the reproducing
controls are screwed to the lower sides of the piano and up under
the keyboard instead of all in the lower middle. I'd appreciate it
if anyone could shed some light on this action. Questions:
1. Are the lock and cancel valves the same type as in the more common
Welte Licensee?
2. Does this type offer any rebuilding difficulties over the more
common type?
3. Is the box suction unit quieter/noisier than the regular box pump?
This piano has "Welte-Mignon" cast into the harp as if this corporation
made the piano itself. Is this a well-made instrument? Any information
at all will be appreciated.
Regards,
Tim Gautreaux
[ The instrument might be a Welte-Mignon "Original" reproduction piano
[ which used a turbine pump by Motor Player Corp. instead of a box pump.
[ I think the player system was manufactured by Auto Pneumatic Action Co.
