I am surprised at all the interest in "Ching Chong" because, frankly,
it is a song I never play. In my opinion, the "jazz", "saxophone", or
otherwise labeled marimba piano roll arrangements, with their heavy
orchestral effects, overpower the melody.
I much prefer straight-forward versions with no marimba. I have never
found a "straight" version of Ching Chong. I notice that all five of
the rolls posted by Robert Perry are "jazz arrangements". The only
additional version I have is on Ideal labeled as a "Chinese One Step."
It, too, is full of jazz effects. (As an aside, I find it interesting
that only the sheet music credits the lyrics of Ching Chong to J. Will
Callahan.)
Compare, for example, the QRS one-step version of "Take Your Girlie
to the Movies" (QRS 849), labeled as played by composer Pete Wendling,
with the Imperial roll played by Charley Straight (9841). The QRS roll
has marimba and could pass for Baxter & Kortlander while the Imperial
roll is the best version I have ever heard. If anyone has a QRS version
that is actually played by Pete Wendling, I would love to hear it.
I mention this possibility because there are two versions, for example,
of "The Tickle Toe" published as QRS 442: one is played by Pete
Wendling and the other by Baxter & Kortlander.
And we all know of other mislabeled rolls, such as "I'll See You in
C-U-B-A" (1050), credited to Baxter & Kortlander but actually played
by Pete Wendling.
