I think that one of the most critical mistakes hobbyists make in
regards to young people is in how those of us who have been part
of whatever hobby for years often react to a young person whose
enthusiasm and interest outpaces their understanding and experience.
All too often, in a broad spectrum of "niche" hobbies I've seen,
youngish folks come along whose interest and enthusiasm is staggering,
but who are quickly put off by the reaction of the more seasoned
hobbyists who, rather than nurturing, encouraging and developing their
interests, merely dismiss them as being somewhat irreverent, annoying,
childish individuals who have nothing of consequence to contribute.
Yes, I know that "newbies", especially the extremely enthusiastic
ones, can be more than a little bit annoying at times. But, I think
that, in any hobby, a young person coming in with such overwhelming
enthusiasm and energy should be nurtured and encouraged, not shunned.
Unfortunately, all too often, rather than finding a haven of
like-minded folks who share their interests, these energetic youngsters
wind up being shunted to the sidelines, and dismissed as having nothing
to contribute. As long as that is allowed to happen, the more seasoned
hobbyists are turning their backs on the very individuals who someday
may carry on the work they have done.
Nurturing the interests of a young person with unbounded passion and
energy can be exasperating. But if we fail to recognize, value and
encourage these energetic new young faces, we run the risk of alienating
them forever - and losing someone who may be able to make a significant
and lasting contribution
