Market Value of Mechanical Music Instruments
By Rick Hageman

As a hobbyist, and being far from a "collector", I likely represent
a given portion of those that just appreciate a plain old mechanical
music instrument. I can recall marveling with awe, the player piano
in my Aunt Grace's living room. As a young child it was so mysterious
watching the keys move, the roll turn, and the sound that came from
within -- truly remarkable for such an impressionable young man.

Back in the mid 1980's, while visiting a local mall, my wife and I
ventured past a now, long gone, music store. Perched near the entrance
on this pre-Christmas day, was an Aeolian Sting II, belting out holiday
tunes. Numerous people stopped to watch and listen, some commenting
how they recalled how a certain family member used to have a player
piano. We decided to watch and ended up purchasing one.

Over the next 15 years, our five children looked forward to playing
or listening to the player piano. An especially fond time was at
Christmas when that special roll, "'Twas the Night Before Christmas",
was played, sometimes over and over! Unfortunately, a divorce brought
this to an end, the piano being gotten by my now ex-wife, who then sold
it for a mere pittance of its worth (at that time).

Two years ago I sought another player and located one about 60 miles
away. It came with close to 100 rolls, however, I had kept my "one half"
of the rolls the court gave me during the divorce, so my collection
would nearly triple. I bought it for a reasonable sum and it is now
enjoyed regularly. It needs some TLC, but it does work and for that
we are happy.

I wouldn't trade it for the world and my children have already asked
what is to become of it when that day comes. I just smile and say,
"I'm taking it with me!"
