Band Organs at Tilden Park, Berkeley, Calif.
By A. B. Bonds
I figure it's time I weighed in on this unfortunate issue. When I was
working in Berkeley in the mid-1970s, I had the privilege of carting
my (quasi-) mobile recording rig up to Tilden Park on a number of
Sunday mornings and taping both of the organs.
When the big Ruth/BAB organ was in tune, it was a monster -- the rolls
were terrific, and the smaller North Tonawanda was no slouch. I have
mastered four CDs from this experience and have distributed them to
a number of MMDers. I am pleased to say that the reaction has been
generally positive.
A year ago I revisited the Tilden Park carousel and was appalled at
the relative silence. There was some kind of mumble coming from the
loudspeakers, but it was barely audible and not really carousel music.
As others have noted, the two proud organs are covered in dust and
debris. At the time I tried to give CD copies of the real performances
of these organs to the "authorities" in charge of the carousel, but the
number I was given by the ticket-person was incorrect and I was never
able to get an address.
If anyone can find out where to send the CDs (and get some assurance
they will be used) I will be happy to send out a set. This is a sad
situation. The Ruth/BAB in full voice is a visceral experience.
