Barrel Organs Built in Amsterdam
By Kasper Janse

Hello, I am doing a bit of research into makers of automatic organs
in Amsterdam circa 1800. The most famous of them was unquestionably
Dietrich Nikolaus Winkel. Four of his instruments are now in the
Utrecht museum "Speelklok". Unique is Winkel's "Componium" which is
in the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Brussels.

Winkel also was the inventor of the principle of the metronome.
J.N. Maelzel saw the prototype of the metronome by Winkel in his
workshop in Amsterdam in 1814, and patented this in his name the
next year in Paris!

You can find more information on this subject on our web site
http://www.pianola.nl/ This information is now only in Dutch,
I may add an English translation later.

I am especially looking for information on instruments built by other
makers in Amsterdam 1780-1850 or instruments by Winkel that are unknown
to me. Other makers are Coenraadt Ludwig Leib, Harmanus Dolman, etc.

Thank you,
Kasper Janse - Pianola Museum
Amsterdam
