The Wurlitzer 153 band organ at Kennywood Park definitely
contributed towards my involvement with mechanical music. Nearly
every summer in the 1970s and '80s my family would take trips to
Pittsburgh to visit my grandparents. We would often go to Kennywood
Park to spend most of the day there.
One of my most favorite rides was the Dentzel carousel, mainly
because of the 153 band organ. I was fascinated by the drum beaters,
swell shutters, and bell bars in action. I also was interested in
the facade with its lighting, as well as the drums since they were
lit from within. Probably my most favorite tune that it played
was "Georgy Girl."
I hope Kennywood is still around for many years to come. It is one
of the comparatively few traditional amusement parks that is still
in operation. In my opinion, the parks carousel will always be one
of the finest of its kind in existence.
