Steinway Tall-case Red Welte
By Wolfgang Huller
The Tall-case Red Welte pianos were the first upright Welte pianos with
keyboard. The earlier cabinet version had had no keyboard. I think
all were built into a Steinway Vertegrand piano. This series started
in 1907, Steinway serial numbers from about 127xxx.
You can find pictures of a restoration of a Tall-case Red Welte at:
http://www.playerpiano.co.uk/steinway.htm
This seems to be a 1908 version. A later 1909 or 1910 version is shown
at: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic-art/464394/6950/Steinway-Welte-player-piano-1910-in-the-British-Piano
This series was discontinued about 1910.
I own two of these Tall-case Red Welte pianos and bought both in Great
Britain. These Steinway Welte pianos also have been imported to the
U.S. The book "Automatische Musikinstrumente aus Freiburg in die Welt
- 100 Jahre Welte-Mignon" shows on p. 168 a picture of the Welte repair
shop, certainly in Brooklyn, with a Tall-case Red Welte in the
background.
