Stella Musical Box Winding Problem
By Doug Olds
The Stella and Mira spring tension locking mechanisms were designed
vastly differently. As mentioned in my post yesterday, the Stella uses
a small planetary gear which revolves inside the large internal winding
gear that is rotated by the cranking gear (i.e. the gear attached to
the crankshaft). The planetary gear will lock the spring tension by
contacting a fixed post that protrudes from the casting. I know this
from experience since I had to replace both the large internal (tooth)
winding gear as well as the small planetary gear on my 17-inch Stella
console box. Not a fun job, but the reward was great, since this box
now winds and plays beautifully.
The Mira spring tension locking mechanism was designed exactly as
described by Nancy Fratti and Craig Smith. If you have questions,
please let me know and I'll try to help.
