Mills Violano Virtuoso Reflections
By Jerry F. Bacon

Hello once again! In the early 1960's I used to care for the Violano
and the band organs at Six Flags Over Texas amusement park. We had
a Violano that had the converter changed out to an electronic power
supply and I remember getting zapped by touching the piano, but that
is not the point here.

The highest string is an E and always sounded very clear and, if you
will, sweet in tone. The S or A strings sounded muddy and fuzzy,
the low G string was good also. I have read many times that it is
very important that the bow wheels be clean, with spaces between the
individual layers, before fresh rosin is applied. But on ours, the
two outer strings gave a great tone and I always enjoyed it and it
brought a fair amount of money for the park.

We had a Wurlitzer 153 band organ and a Wurlitzer 148 (minus the
trumpets). When the park was closed and all were gone but me
I would play them (one at a time) and I could hear them throughout
the whole park. Those days are precious memories to me.
