Wurlitzer "Autograph" Piano With Welte System
By Dave Krall
I recently acquired a 1917 Wurlitzer Autograph piano that uses the
Welte-Mignon system. It has the Wurlitzer 6-roll changer and still
has its original factory paint job of ivory with gold leaf trim.
The rolls for this piano were the subject of a discussion on MMD
back in 2006, indexed at
http://www.mmdigest.com/Archives/KWIC/A/autograph.html
Wurlitzer built two versions of the Autograph Piano. From 1915 to
1918 thirteen of these pianos were sold using rolls produced especially
for Wurlitzer by M. Welte & Sons, Inc., with the special leaders for
use in the roll changer. Production of the Autograph piano ceased for
two years and then resumed in 1921, with a new version playing wider
rolls and utilizing the Amphion Art-Echo system.
Does anyone know of any other existing Wurlitzer Autograph pianos,
either of the Welte or Art-Echo style? Does anyone have rolls or know
of any other rolls for these pianos?
Thanks!
