[ In 100627 MMDigest, "59-key Gasparini Organ Played in San Francisco",
[ I remarked that the organ in the photo looks like a Welte Cottage
[ Orchestrion. -- Robbie
Felix Schoenstein was operating in San Francisco at the time. Here
is a tiny excerpt from the forthcoming (in 2011?) book by Art Reblitz
and me.
Mention must be made of Felix Schoenstein, of San Francisco,
who initially was a representative for several lines of musical
merchandise, a representative for a family-related factory back
in the Black Forest, just like Welte. He may have intentionally
located on the West Coast, putting himself as far away as possible
from Welte in New York City, sensing that chances for success were
better in that remote location.

[ After close examination of the high-resolution photo, I agree
[ that the orchestrion in the 1894 photo at Sutro Baths is not
[ by Welte and it was likely manufactured by Orchestrionfabrik
[ Schoenstein in Villengen (Schwarzwald), Germany. The photograph
[ shows the foreground pipes forming a "V" (for Villengen?) that
[ extends from wall to wall. In contrast, illustrations of early
[ Welte orchestrions reproduced in Bower's Encyclopedia show the
[ foreground pipes somewhat forming a "W" (for Welte?). So
[ I believe my first impression of it being a Welte orchestrion
[ was wrong. -- Robbie
