Thanks to Mr. Barrett for identifying Mr. Howard Brockway in the
mentioned photo. His thoughts on the Brockway recordings for QRS's
Art Apollo rolls as being shared Ampico recordings could very well be
correct. While I do not have any of the QRS product to compare the
Ampico rolls to, I do know that in the 1920-21 years American Piano
Company entered into some kind of [cross-] licensing agreement with
QRS to use certain QRS masters. It seems that Ampico issued several
QRS popular titles with their (Ampico) coding added.
A great case in point is Ampico roll 58763, "Margie", played by
"Sylvester & Jensen" (fictitious names). This roll is the QRS issue
of "Margie" played by the composers, J. Russel Robinson & Con Conrad!
The Ampico recording does have one extra repeated chorus added.
I'm sure QRS was probably quite happy to use some of the Ampico
classical library to issue on their Art Apollo label. From all
evidence this "sharing" agreement lasted only about one year, ending
abruptly in 1921 or 1922. Perhaps an experiment that was not quite
satisfactory, or maybe sales were not all that great. The recession
of 1921 might have something to do with the idea to abort further use
of sharing masters.
Ampico did change their master roll format from their previous use
of 20-to-1 masters to 30-to-1 masters in the 1922 season. The 20-to-1
and 30-to-1 formulas are certainly not mathematically compatible. The
QRS rolls of the 1920-22 period are compatible with the 20-to-1 Ampico
formula and vice versa. Maybe technology decided this discontinuance
for them?
