Lubricating Musical Box Star Wheel Mechanism
By Jim Quashnock

I recently disassembled, cleaned, and re-assembled a very nice
Polyphon disc music box which looks like a Style 2041. This was my
first attempt and I'm quite proud that, after only a little work on
alignment, it plays great with no clicks or buzzes.

The question I have is about the star mechanism. I was informed
that this should have no oil. However, there are now dry silicone
sprays which leave no sticky or dust collecting residue (the stuff
I use on my table saw, planer, blades, etc). I know these instruments
have worked just fine for the past 100 years without any lube there,
but would it hurt to use this type of dry lube just to help it survive
another 100 years?
