Recutting 44-note & 46-note Player Organ Rolls
By Ed Gaida

Some time back I posted a request for collector's lists of Aeolian
46-note organ rolls and also Wilcox & White 44-note rolls with the idea
of scanning rolls for re-cutting purposes. The response was gratifying
as many sent spreadsheets listing rolls in their collections. Others
simply told me "I have about (number) of the rolls in storage and would
be happy to lend them for re-cutting."

This post is more of an update than anything else to let members of
this forum know that the project is in its very early stages but is
progressing. A few rolls have been sent as samples for me to scan and
the results are gratifying.

As for a re-cutting project that is in the distant future. New dies
will have to be fabricated for the perforator and before I undertake
that project some sort of commitment will have to be made by those
owners who desire new music. How this will all come about is anyone's
guess, since a group of titles need to be decided on and then
subscriptions will be offered. Nothing will be done until the money
is received for a set of rolls, whatever the titles. To break even
financially will probably never happen no matter what quantity of
rolls are sold. Such is the music roll business, but a need is present
for preservation of the aging paper rolls and duplication of same.

I will keep the forum posted as things progress and I do thank
publicly all who responded.
