Wurlitzer Photoplayer in New Zealand
By Michael Woolf
An update to Don Paynter's post about a New Zealand Photoplayer
which brings memories of many years ago. Existence of the instrument
from the Strand Theatre has long been known to New Zealand collectors.
It was held by the late Pat Newman whose collection was sold at auction
a few weeks ago.
I have not seen the Photoplayer but the condition of the remains was
reported by two knowledgeable and involved collectors here as being
"probably unrestoreable." These were Les Stenersen (not "Stevenson")
and Rod Cornelius. I can confirm that parts were in the possession
of Ralph Sewell, an organ-building enthusiast. From him and by way of
a third party a few of the percussion traps were given to me. If the
proposed rebuilding project succeeds I will be delighted to donate them.
Reference is made to the five Wurlitzer instruments that were imported
to this country, one of which is located here in our home.
I invite Don to contact me. Although there are doubts about the
feasibility of restoration I offer any help I can give to the project.
