I read with great interest the posting by Randolph Herr concerning his
acquiring the roll and music collection of George Grossman, and the
later posting by another concerned collector about his intentions of
disposing of some of the collection. I for one know both Mr. Herr and
Mr. Grossman. George Grossman has been a long time customer of mine
here at Keystone Music Roll Co., and Randolph Herr has been a personal
friend I have known for some 30-odd years.
I can assure everyone that Randolph's acquisition of the collection is
certainly the best thing for all involved. Mr. Grossman is one of the
most colorful characters I have met in this hobby, to put it mildly!
Believe me, the description of the collection, his housing of it, his
quirky lifestyle, etc., was only lightly touched upon by Mr. Herr.
I'm sure George and his family are very relieved Mr. Herr has stepped
in to save and share the collection, for surely it would have ended up
in the dump otherwise.
Randolph has rescued many musical "artifacts" and treasures in the
greater New York metropolitan area that otherwise would have been
tossed out and destroyed. He has generously shared his findings with
others. He has especially been very helpful here at Keystone Music
Roll Co., loaning us piano rolls to scan and re-issue so that everyone
can share in the musical wealth. I'm sure he will be very open to us
using some of Mr. Grossman's rolls for re-issue also.
I for one am relieved he has gotten this unwieldy collection of stuff.
I hope Randolph doesn't mind that I shared my views about this situation
with all of MMD.
