Hello all. I have recently been made aware of an available Lessing
Orchestral player piano, serial number 140066, maybe very early 1920s.
The case has a 4-digit number stamped into each wooden side panel.
The present owner has made me aware that the player piano still
functions. It is most certainly a good candidate for a restoration
as it appears to be complete.
There is a lever-operated device (that can be seen in pictures) that
apparently allows the piano to sound like a honky tonk piano which has
a disconnected link. It looks to me like a quick fix. Attached to
the spool box is a motor control knob and switch. It looks to me to
be an add-on, and I am told that it works.
The case would seem to have its original finish and is not that bad.
There are the maker labels on the fallboard that additionally note
that the piano was made for an individual named Byron Mauzy (a notable
San Francisco piano business owner). There is also a piano seat with
compartment. There is a very vintage label on the inside of the top of
the seat but I could not make it out or photo it at that time.
I snapped a few pictures of the piano innards but since it is in a
storage unit I was not able to get as many photos as I would have liked
at that time.
If there is any interest in acquiring this instrument, by all means
email me and I will happily send the pictures I have, and put you in
touch with the owner. Since I am an apartment dweller, and already
have two player pianos, I could not consider this piano for myself,
but if not for those two, I would have! The instrument is located in
Concord, California.
Thanks,
Whit Greene
