Playing General MIDI Files on Yamaha Disklavier
By Don Teach
Disklavier will play GM (General MIDI) MIDI files. There is
hidden menu in the Disklavier that will allow it play General MIDI.
You can call Yamaha service or look in a past MMDigest where
I think I described how to turn on MIDI.
The first Disklavier uprights can do a lot more than any of the
owner's manuals tell you. For example, you can play into the unit
with another MIDI device and record your own diskette in the
Disklavier. I used to use a MIDI sequencer to play MIDI files and
record them with the Disklavier's floppy drive creating a Disklavier
disk.
The MIDI menu is more easily found in the later Disklaviers. My
original paperwork showing the hidden menus was unfortunately on
early fax machine paper and now has faded to the point it can no
longer be read.
If there is interest I will try to get the Yamaha service depart
to send me that paperwork via email.
