Unknown 88-note Push-up Piano Player in UK
By Edward Baylis
Hello all, I am trying to identify the manufacturer of an 88-note
push-up piano player; I think it was made by Hupfeld but am not sure.
It was moved from Germany to the UK some 60 years ago together with
a collection of around 400 Hupfeld Animatic rolls.
The cabinet is ebonised and the dimensions are 54 inches long x 38
high x 19 deep. The player's stack serial number is 40494-18340.
It has an 88-note trackerbar with snake-bite expression holes plus
sustain. It also has vertical tracking wheel discs at each end that
control a horizontal auto tracking bellow.
Access to the controls is via a drop front panel; the levers are
marked: Discant, Bass, Solo, and Tempo. Also attached are two levers
with large Bakelite button tops that swing out to offer manual control
of the pianos sustain and soft pedal. The horizontally mounted
three-paddle wind motor has a rewind bellows attached to one end.
All the small tubing is made of lead.
There is no evidence of a makers name outside or within the cabinet.
Any comments or thoughts would be most welcome.
