Morris Museum Receives Gift of Frank Metzger Restoration Workshop
The Morris Museum is pleased to announce that Frank and Lore Metzger
of Rye, New York and Stuart, Florida, have donated to the museum the
contents of Frank Metzger's workshop, devoted to the restoration of
miniature musical boxes, objets de vertu, and automata. The items in
the workshop will facilitate on-site repair and conservation of the
Guinness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata,
helping to preserve an important chapter in the world's musical
heritage.
"We couldn't be more delighted to have this incredibly generous
donation," said Steve Miller, Executive Director of the Morris Museum.
"The Guinness Collection is one of the premier collections of
mechanical musical instruments and automata (19th-century animated
figures) in the world. Having the contents of Frank Metzger's shop,
amassed over many years, will enable Guinness Collection Conservator
Jeremie J. Ryder to perform a wide variety of specialized conservation
work and repairs that had not previously been possible to accomplish
in-house."
Frank Metzger, who has spent much of his life learning about and
restoring early examples of mechanical music, is well-known in
international collecting circles for his own collection. He has
written extensively and presented technical workshops on small musical
boxes and musical carillon and organ clocks, and is a past president
of the Musical Box Society International.
