[ Ref. 100217 MMDigest, 58-note Rolls for Aeolian Concertola? ]
Robbie was kind enough to post my earlier question regards possible
58-note rolls for an Aeolian Concertola. The Concertola link is fading
in my mind as reality, but more discoveries, even more interesting,
have been made.
In doing more research with these rolls, however, I have found that
many, if not most, are pieces that *do not exist* in any Aeolian
catalog I have. Maybe these are later rolls that show up in later
Aeolian documents. May I ask the MMD readers to see if these rolls
are listed in a catalog copy you might have?
Some of the rolls make reference to music books and specific pages in
those books where these pieces were sourced from. The owner obviously
had very specific pieces that he wanted manufactured. I found one roll,
listed below, that attributes the roll cutting to Walter I. Pratt,
January 3rd, 1918.
I suspect he made all of these and what a job he did! They are truly
magnificent pieces that align flawlessly. Some of the rolls are dated
1919 so that is apparently the period when they were made: 1918 - 1920.
They are on heavy premium quality paper that has aged very well.
Here are some titles for you to search, and I have perhaps ten
more titles:
* 2nd Sonata for Grand Organ - 1st Movement, Allegro - Felix Borowski
* St. Lawrence Sketches for Organ by Alexander Russell - The Bells
of St. Anne - de Beupre
* Fantasy-Prelude - Charles MacPherson
* Sonata No. 5, Op.l11, First Movement, Grave - Josef Rheinberger
* 3rd Symphonie Pour Orgue Op. 28 Louis Vierne -
Cut by Walter I. Pratt - January 3rd, 1918.
Attribution on roll: To Professor Samuel A. Baldwin - Chaconne -
page 32 - Volume 3 - Douze Pieces Pour Grand-Orgue par Joseph Bonnet.
Samuel A. Baldwin gave an organ recital at the Great Hall, College
of the City of New York. It was documented in the New York Times on
May 5, 1918.
Any information on these rolls would be appreciated. All of them are
annotated from beginning to end. I will probably offer them on eBay
shortly. These rolls belong in much better hands than mine. They are
serious pieces for very serious organists.
