Sealing Pouch Leather
By Grant Chapman, NY

As I read Gilles Chouinard's post [100125 MMDigest], I remembered
several things that may be of interest to some. For example, prior
to WW2, mink oil was actually from minks and not the product sold
today under the marketing term of "Mink Oil". Also, naphtha used
to refer to crude oil, not the distilled solvent of today. And,
dubbin is normally a paste made from wax, an oil and tallow.

The last ventil chest we worked on had the leather pouches treated
with liquid tallow. Acetone cleaned off the areas that need glue.
And, nothing was applied after the pouch was formed, because that
leads to cold-formed pouches.
