My Fischer Ampico Grand Piano
By Robert Hunt, VT
I am enjoying my new to me Ampico Fischer baby grand. I purchased it
at a local auction and it was advertised as a fully restored piano.
It lived for a period of time at the Three Bears Inn and Restaurant in
Connecticut and after they went out of business was in a Vermont bread
and breakfast. Someone on another list thought that Bill Edgerton had
done some work on it, I don't know if that is true or not. Perhaps
someone may know the history of this piano and its restoration.
As it has not had a lot of use for some time it has a few bugs. It
was not turning off quickly nor was it always repeating. With a bit
of sucking on the hoses she not is shutting off the instant a roll
rewinds and is beginning to be better about repeating a roll when the
repeat valve is on. Occasionally it won't shift into reroll but that
is the odd occurrence.
The case is in very good condition and is quite attractive with simple
elegant lines. I don't care for a fussy case. The sliding music rack
is missing what must have been brass pins to lock it on each side of
the case. It doesn't look like they were screws. Are replacements
available or what would make a good substitute?
There is no belly cloth. I am thinking of making one and wonder if it
will cut down on mechanical noise. How much noise is normal? There is
some hum that bothers the better half though I am just happy to have
the instrument.
I hope to find someone in Vermont to come tweak it since it has been
moved a good deal in the last few years.
