Alan Rigg is looking for Musical Box Nuts in the UK. Perhaps it would
be easier for us to help him if we knew exactly what type of nuts he is
seeking.
Most of the nuts I have encountered are squares (4 sided nuts),
although there are plenty with six or even more facets. I would say
that I have come across mostly iron nuts but I have also come across
quite a lot that were rather brassy. You can tell the iron ones from
the merely brassy from their attractive personality when near anything
magnetic. Nuts, or screws for that matter, can be either right or left
handed. Of course, right handed ones are the most common but you may
encounter a left handed nut unexpectedly -- and they must be handled
carefully as they are often somewhat eccentric.
On the other hand (so to speak <ha ha>), perhaps Alan is asking in
a more generic fashion and means to ask about screws, as well, as their
heads are similar to nuts. The most common are the cheese head nuts,
or simply 'cheese heads'. They come in several shapes, both polished
and a little rough. Although a cheese head may have straight sides
and a chrome dome on top, my favorite is the smooth, flat top with the
polished ring around the crown. We need not worry about screws called
Phillip or ones of the metric persuasion as they were not around when
the musical box nuts were created.
Lastly, it could be the case that Alan is looking for an entirely
different type of nut. Maybe he is looking for the nuts having a round
head, with ears, and hair on the top. People sometimes say that these
nuts aren't tightened down all the way. Or they may say that they have
a few loose screws.
They may be right, but I like these nuts best of all.
