Built-in Welte-Mignon Vorsetzer Pedal Actuators
By Mark Reinhart
David Sharpe inquired about how the pedals are controlled in the
Welte-Mignon Vorsetzer:
> My US-made Original Welte-Built Vorsetzer came with two pneumatics
> which had to be installed inside or under the piano ...
In all Welte-Mignon T-100 Vorsetzers built in Freiburg and Poughkeepsie
there are two rods in the bottom of the Vorsetzer which are rotated by
internal pneumatics. In the rear center of the Vorsetzer there are two
openings in which linkage is attached to the rods to operate the una
corda (soft pedal) and sustaining pedals of the piano. The linkage is
adjustable to various heights since there is a lot of deviation between
different pianos.
This is unlike the Vorsetzers built by Welte-Mignon Corporation (Bronx,
New York) which were made after 1920. The ["Original"] Welte-Mignon
Corporation device relied upon the pneumatics controlling soft and
sustaining pedals be mounted to the piano.
M. Welte und Söhne in Freiburg continued their earlier practice of the
pedal linkage attached to the Vorsetzer for their entire production
through the 1920s.
If anyone needs the Vorsetzer pedal linkage I had some made the last
time someone inquired.
