As Matthew Caulfield reported, seconded by Fred Dahlinger, in-depth
information about Juergen Hocker's new book can be found as the first
item on Juergen's homepage: http://www.playerpianokonzerte.de/index.htm
This page presents a review on Juergen's activities in the field of
player piano concerts starting back in 1987.
I had the chance of personally attending various of these events
in the past 15 years, whenever my time allowed it, and I was always
surprised by the acceptance of those compositions that were specially
composed for the player piano. Thanks to Juergen Hocker's activities,
the player piano found its way back to the stage of the most important
concert halls in Europe, among them the Berlin Philharmonie, Cologne
Philharmonie, Munich Philharmonie, Warsaw Philharmonie, Centre Pompidou
of Paris, Barbican Hall in London. He even staged concerts for
children. The player piano did not fail to attract their attention
and they were impressed by the unusual technique and music.
Most of the web page is written in German, as the book is, too. But
the photos alone in the sub-page "Fotogalerien zum Buch" are worth
having more than a fast glimpse. On these photos you can see, for
example, the finest details such as the pencil marks of the editors on
the rolls for the conversion of the Hupfeld Animatic to the Triphonola
system -- see chapter 6 (Kapitel 6), or the pencil marks of composers,
who created compositions especially for the player piano, chapter 14
(Kapitel 14).
I cannot but repeat the annotation of Matthew Caulfield in his book
review: "Now there is a translation job that cries to be done by some
MMD'er who can read German and write good English!"
