Seek Brass Ferrules for 6-leg Ampico Grand
By Charlie Wasson

I am restoring a 1929 Chickering Ampico B. The legs (6) do not have
casters and appear to have never had them installed; nevertheless
I would like to have casters to make it somewhat mobile.

The leg at the bottom is 1-3/8 inch square and tapers upwards for
2-5/8 inch to a square of 1-3/4 inch. Schaff has a nice brass wheel
with a 13/16 round socket with about a 1/2 inch shank which looks like
it would work nicely. I may have to shorten the leg a bit to make bench
height about right. But, being a reproducing piano there will be few
if any pianists playing it.

My problem is I can find no leg ferrules of a size to fit the tapered
leg or even a small none-tapered ferrule that would go up the taper an
inch or so. Schaff offers one size only, a ferrule that is 1-1/8 inch
ID square, non-tapered. Does anyone have some old ferrules either
tapered or non-tapered with a top ID of 1-1/2 inch or around this
number?

Second question: Am I considering doing something to this piano that
should not be undertaken?
