Tin Toy Manivelle Music Box Plays Reeds
By Nicholas Simons
I have a tin toy manivelle similar to the one described by Peter Heinesen.
Mine is made in Germany and is of the form of the Notre Dame cathedral.
The mechanism appears identical and mine has the words MADE IN GERMANY
printed on the case. Also printed is DRGM which is a patent mark.
This type of child's toy is called an "Amen box" by collectors today,
due to the sound produced. They have three sets of four reeds which
are played sequentially as a chord progression, until the child either
gets fed up or his parent has had enough and gives him a good beating
(permitted in those far off days!).
Similar "Amen boxes" were made in America by the Chein Company and are
usually in the form of a church.
Best regards from GB,
Nicholas Simons
