Mechanical music and the fair sex
Although not a dating site, as relief editor Matthew Caulfield pointed
out, I think we could all have some fun with this one, and I can hardly
wait to see where the string leads!
Having given up on girls (Aw, shucks!), for the time being anyway,
I well remember a young creature to whom I played a very nice Edison
phonograph. The song was called "Crystal Fountains" and was played by
a nice little orchestra, the sort that would have played in the better
class of hotel.
It is true that the wax was not in mint condition, but really rather
good for 100 years old. At the end (or maybe just before, I forget)
she described the listening experience as "a different form of pain."
Maybe readers could help me try to understand exactly what she meant?!
Another dear lady, clearly unimpressed with something approaching
30 ranks of well-tuned organ pipes thundering out the last part of
"Zampa" overture on an Aeolian Duo-Art roll said, after the last
crashing chords had been rendered, and whilst looking at the mantle
shelf, "Oh, what a lovely clock." <Sigh>
Exasperated in Exeter,
