"Mazeppa, Grand Galop de Concert" by Wollenhaupt
By Rowland Lee
I can offer only a partial answer to Martin Anderson's request for
information about the name "Mazeppa" (MMD 091105). Mazeppa was
a Russian historical character who lived 1644-1709. He is mentioned
in literary works by Byron, Pushkin and Victor Hugo.
In addition to the excellent Wollenhaupt piece, (which works very well
on the Orchestrelle), there is a rarely-performed opera of the same
name by Tchaikovsky (1884) and also a highly descriptive piano solo and
orchestral piece by Liszt depicting an episode in Mazeppa's life where,
as a punishment for some crime, he was tied naked to a wild horse. The
thundering hooves can be heard to great effect on Emil Sauer's Duo-Art
recording (0232).
Mazeppa's life was evidently a great inspiration to writers and
composers of the romantic era.
