I suspect it would be a never-ending, hellacious, and really impossible
task to track down every single band organ or orchestrion still extant.
That said, it certainly would be interesting to compile a census of
publicly-operating machines and their histories. The National Carousel
Association's carousel census ( http://nca-usa.org/NCAcensus.html ) does
include information about band organs accompanying the carousels it
describes, but in my experience that information is erroneous or
incomplete at least half of the time.
I think the historical information might be of even more interest to
our community, because I'm sure we all have some questions we wish we
could answer. Perhaps some interviewing could go hand-in-hand with
this census process.
I'm presently a student and I therefore don't have time to embark on
this task; but I have considerable skills in computers, and if anyone
does decide to do this, I would love to be involved in computerizing
the information in whatever way might be useful.
