Welte-Mignon Recording Technique
By Karl Petersen

Dr. Peetz and others have had various theories about how recording was
done by Welte. Some have postulated how the intensity coding for the
rolls was extracted from the recording session. Has any of this
actually been built up in hardware and verified?

My posting earlier this year suggesting how this might have been done
was greeted with a few comments colored by the April 1st date of my
posting. But I had really hoped someone would respond with a serious
technical discussion. It was a century ago that this system was
developed, and we are not really able today to say we understand how it
was done.
