Unknown 15.25" Wide 9/inch Organ Rolls
By Tom Hutchinson
Hi MMD, At the recent auction at PPCo in Wichita I acquired
a number of 15.25-inch-wide music rolls. Most of these were
obviously designed for some version of Melville Clark 15-1/4-inch
tracker bar player piano. However there are two types of roll that
clearly do not belong to any of the above types.
The first type, of which I have 35 rolls, are labeled on the box,
"The Capitol Music Roll" and in smaller print below, "Unified Funeral
Organ". On some on the leaders it additionally says "The John Church
Co." These rolls have a slotted drive on the right instead of the
usual square drive seen in most 15.25-inch rolls.
Secondly, I have 13 rolls of the following. The box label says in
large letters at the center top "UNIT". To the left of that in smaller
print it says "Smith Solo" and to the left it says "Organ Roll". On
the pull tab it says "Clark Rolls" and superimposed over that in
smaller print is the word "Orchestra". The unusual thing about these
"UNIT" rolls is that the drive flange is slotted and on the left.
Both styles are punched 9 holes to the inch and they will not play on
my dual tracker bar Melville Clark piano. Both types appear to have
a lot of expression coding off to each side of the roll. Does anyone
know anything about these two types of rolls?
Thanks in advance for any info,
Tom Hutchinson
