283 Gram Hide Glue
By Don Teach
I intend this post for the man that uses hide glue. I have bought
many pounds of hide glue over the years, for player piano work to
veneer work to gluing vinyl on guitar cabinets.
There are several different types of hide glue, measured in gram
strength. The hide glue for gluing vinyl on guitar cabinets is
a modified hide glue not suitable for most piano work.
As I understand it the higher the gram number the faster the set
time and more holding strength. 190 gram is the typical glue sold to
woodworkers as it is a slower setting glue (and smelly). If you are
proficient then you can use a faster setting glue.
I bought some that is 283 gram that I really like and have shared with
a couple of my woodworking friends. One side effect is that the smell
is not as bad as the typical glue but still has that old-time hide glue
odor that adds so much to the "feel" of a wood shop. We have found
that it works well for us and if anyone wants to try it then I can sell
it for $5.00 per pound. It sets up quickly and holds extremely well.
