New Roll "57 Varieties" by Earl "Fatha" Hines
By Robbie Rhodes
MMDer Stephen Kent Goodman announces his new 88-note piano
roll transcription of "57 Varieties" by Earl "Fatha" Hines.
Mr. Goodman writes:
1928 Hines' Jazz Solo Makes Roll Debut 81 Years Later!
Earl "Fatha" Hines, whom many consider the father of the jazz
piano style, recorded in 1928 his composition 57 Varieties.
Incredibly, it was never issued on a player piano roll -- until now!
The new piano roll is described at http://gnaw-vol-ty.com/shop/page/14
and an audio sample is offered at http://gnaw-vol-ty.com/shop/page/3
On hearing the short audio sample, I think Mr. Goodman has done an
excellent job. It should be possible for a pianolist at a responsive
player piano to sound very much like Hines himself playing!
The new roll and others may be ordered at
