To MMD: Enough of us (presently 8) are interested in seeing the
two-roll set of "Die Walküre" recut for Duo-Art, that Julian Dyer in
the UK is in the process of doing final editing of Spencer Chase's
scans prior to cutting them. If you wish to add your name to the list,
now would be a good time to contact Julian.
Recently I received the following note from Julian:
"You'll be pleased, and probably surprised, to hear that my new paper
has finally arrived! It's what Tom Jansen in Germany has used for
many years for his Welte recuts, and he's helped me get some. It's
a nice traditional white paper, of exactly the right thickness and
flexibility for rolls. It's not waxed, but instead contains 'wet
strength' resins that make it very resistant to humidity changes."
For those who have not yet seen a sample of Julian's Duo-Art roll
cutting, it is perfect in every detail, a punch-for-punch copy of
the original. Better cut rolls were not produced by Aeolian when the
gods did it themselves -- no lie! Nothing any of us have seen has been
as good from when Larry Givens began trying to recut Duo-Art, and I've
been buying recuts regularly since back then.
These rolls are, for all intents and purposes, _originals_ except that
they are on new paper of proven quality. When compared to the first
paper Julian used, this paper is much thinner, and tightens properly
after reroll. It's perfect. I've seen it. I've played it. I love it.
Many years ago the Powells intended to cut all of the Ring Cycle. They
completed both "Die Götterdämmerung" and "Das Rheingold". Hopefully
there will be enough interest and we will be able to complete that
project and have Julian cut the three-roll set of "Siegfried" next.
If you want to join us, let me or Julian know. If you contact me,
I will pass on your name and address to Julian, who will let you know
what the costs will be, and then mail the final copy directly to you.
I am not in business, nor do intend to go into business -- I just want
to see some things recut that I really like.
Spencer Chase has just finished scanning Milne's medleys, numbers 10,
16, 21, and 22 and is forwarding them to Julian. If you're interested
having new copies of these rolls, contact Julian at

Who knows, maybe they'll be next.
