Seek Repair of Mills Violano Rotary Converter
By Howard Wyman
Has anyone in the group had the rotary converter from a Mills
Violano successfully rewound? If so, who did the job?
Ours has been humming along just fine but suddenly it blew out
the screw-in line fuses. None of the fuses on the load side blew.
I replaced the line fuses and now the converter starts but it does
not get up to synchronous speed so there is no DC output.
I disconnected the converter and tested it on the bench with a 60
watt light bulb as a load. The converter starts up but it doesn't
get up to full speed. The light bulb does not light and no DC voltage
shows up on a voltmeter. I wondered if it might be the centrifugal
switch for the start winding on the motor but it is so difficult to
check as it is behind the slip rings on the AC input side.
I know I could replace the converter with a solid-state power supply,
but if it is possible I'd like to keep the machine as authentic as
possible.
Thanks,
Howard Wyman
