Piano Roll: Listening to a Birch Tree
By Bob Billings
An artist in New York City is working on an interesting project
containing piano rolls. Here is part of what she sent to me.
I am working on a project which is to hear a birch tree. I have
scanned the bark and isolated the marks of the tree and now those
images need to be made into a piano roll. This project is part of
an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design here in NYC.

She has converted the JPEG images into MP3 files and wants create piano
rolls from them. I've made some suggestions to her about how to do this.
Converting them to MIDI files is the easiest path and she is looking
into this. Another is to use the JPEG files to drive a laser cutter to
make the rolls, and she is exploring this path as well.
She will need a player piano in the New York City area to test the rolls.
Does anyone have one she can use?
As you can imagine, the result is a rather chaotic jumble of sound --
but it is art!
