I use Kreger Piano Service in Faribault, Minnesota. They have done
keyboards in plastic for me and their work is excellent. They will
also replace the sharps if you need them, and they will nicely
re-bush the front and center felts at prices that I think are more
than reasonable. Their turnaround time is less than a week.
Pack the keys _very_ well in a large double-weight box, wrapping each
individual key in newspaper with plenty of bubble wrap all around them.
If the keys get lost or badly damaged in shipping, you will be junking
that piano. The box you use will be making two trips because they will
be returned to you in the same box you sent them in, so again I'll
stress to use an extra-strong, large heavy carton.
You might bear in mind that plastic keytops are generally thicker than
ivory ones. If you don't want your wood naturals to be reduced on a
key thickness planer to accommodate this new height, you might ask that
they don't do that.
I don't like how the machine makes a nasty curved rip on the tops of
the keys just behind the keytop tails; I'd rather raise the fallboard
felted rail a fraction of an inch to allow for the new keytop thickness.
It's a relatively minor thing, but I'm very picky about cosmetics, and
for me it's all about the details of a nice finishing job. Also, they
will send the old ivory back to you if ask them to. Contact
