Hello All, that's enough chatter about pouch sealing. As we have heard
from many restorers, including Art Reblitz who has restored and brought
to life many fine nickelodeons and orchestrions in the U.S.A. and abroad,
we should respect each party's ideas regarding certain restoration and
repair standards.
After reading the pouch sealing debate in MMDigest the past several
weeks we felt compelled to chime in. To seal or not to seal, potato
or potahto -- yes, Amphion sealed as well as the Ampico systems. We
seal at our discretion.
We are involved in restoration and repair of clocks and watches as
well as automatic musical instruments, and in the trade have found many
different ways that these have been restored. As well as orchestrions,
no two are the same, as we have two Seeburg H orchestrions in our shop
now, including one of three known mahogany-cased machines, and they are
both different.
So back to sealing. Do what ever gives you a great playing result.
Many aforementioned rebuilders have always been very helpful in giving
restoration ideas and never pushing any particular way of doing
rebuilding, just giving great advice on what they have found to give
good results.
In closing with our 3-bits worth, remember what a dull collecting and
rebuilding world it would be if it was not for many restorers like Art
who has put in print many great publications and articles regarding
automatic musical instruments. The next time you visit a large
collection take a good listen and enjoy the many machines that would
have been silenced if it was not restored, with or without sealed
pouches.
