Hello -- I am currently restoring to factory condition the Wurlitzer
146-B band organ that used to be on the carousel at Norumbega Park in
Newton, Massachusetts. The park closed 46 years ago; today there is
scarcely a trace it ever existed.
The surviving Wurlitzer dock records show the band organ was shipped in
April, 1925, and after exhaustive research I have positively confirmed
that this is the Norumbega organ. By chance I finally located the man
who actually removed the organ after the park closed and he is in fact
an AMICA member. He thought ahead enough to take a few pictures just
before removing it, positively confirming this to be the organ.
Very few pictures of the organ in its days of operation have been
found and none very good. In fact, very few pictures of the carousel
have emerged at all outside of a couple post cards, one exterior shot
from a very rare souvenir book I found in eBay, a few off the Internet
showing only partial views of the organ taken probably in the 1950s,
and a frame I pulled off a video. The historical society has yet to
respond to any of my inquiries in spite that I have what is probably
the sole surviving artifact of the park.
If anyone out there happens to have some pictures of this carousel,
particularly any depicting the organ, I would very much appreciate
scans of them. Personal stories of anyone who may have visited this
carousel would also be appreciated. I would like to document as much
history of this band organ as possible.
