Hey editor & all, As someone who did not grow up with 'mechanical
music' (and no, I'm not considering iPods and transistor radios part
of that!), my skills and knowledge of them are rather limited. Most of
the banter and knowledge going back and forth on the list here I read
and file away for learning. Until owning my piano, I honestly never
even heard the terms 'hide glue' or 'tempo box'.
But I digress. My knowledge lies in computers and web sites. A friend
of mine brought a complaint to me yesterday. With all the smaller
independent roll cutters and re-cutters and sellers, he claimed that
it was impossible to find a roll for my piano (my birthday's coming up,
and he was shopping to get me one) with all the sites and such out
there. (Rather, as I interpreted it, there was too much of a selection
and he had issues identifying which would work on my piano, which would
play with a tweak or two, and which wouldn't at all. Not to mention
styles and individual songs.)
So, we talked and an idea was proposed. It wouldn't be too difficult
for me to throw together a web site that would allow everyone making
rolls (be it for nickelodeons, 88-note pianos, Duo-Art and so on)
to upload their master list. Essentially, no purchasing would be done,
but instead roll information would be readily available. For example,
the cutter (with link to your individual site), song title(s), music
style (soundtrack, waltz, rag, foxtrot), roll style (Duo-Art, 88-note)
and then a small text for a roll description. (Also, possibly price?)
The thought would be that users would be given a page where they
could select their search criteria, i.e., roll type -- 88-Note, Waltz,
anything with "girl" in the title. After searching, they'd have a list
of rolls that match their criteria.
So, I'm open to thoughts. If you're in favor or against, drop me
a line. Obviously I won't do anything if there's no interest, but this
is something I could give back to the mechanical music people! :)
