Favorite Recordings of Mechanical Music
By Brian Smith

Hey MMDers, My favorite recording so far of mechanical music
was produced by Terry Hathaway around seven years ago -- the
"Hupfeld Helios III/39" orchestrion, CDs 1 through 4. An excellent
representation of Hupfeld Helios orchestrions, circa 1910.

The musical selection is very impressive, albeit only a portion of the
vast library of Helios rolls. These CDs represent everything from
popular to classical music from the legendary German arrangers.

The recording itself is rather 'low-fidelity' leaving a lot to be
desired, but if you have an excellent stereo system with many watts,
you can boost the bass levels and adjust the treble levels to bring out
the best representation of what a Hupfeld actually sounds like.

These four CDs are currently being offered by 'Chris Carslisle, Band
Organ Music'. I highly recommend this recording from Terry Hathaway,
among many others including the Weber Otero. Check it out!
