Seeburg "E" Description
By Don Teach

To Mr. Lamar Meadows -- First, congratulations on your purchase.
I was unable to personally inspect the Seeburg E you bought but
two well-known restorers were at the auction with reports on the
instrument.

Personally I would like to see photographs of the insides. Original
Seeburg instruments used rosewood for the xylophone bars and are
marked on the first bar JC Deagan (except some H models). On the
A bar is stamped A-435.

The action stacks came in two versions but in both the nipples for
the bulk of the tubing come out of the bottom of the stack. The stack
is the part that contains the pneumatics that actually work the keys.
The last version produced played an extra octave of notes outside the
normal A roll range.

Seeburg E's came with one of three different veneers: oak (most
common), mahogany or walnut. I have never seen or heard of any other
veneer on a Seeburg piano.

The Seeburg E always played the style "A" music roll, available from
Ed Gaida and others. They are common on eBay. A search with one of
the Internet search engines should result in a supplier of "A" rolls.

At this time the materials to rebuild the player system in a player
piano are available from PlayerCare.com owned by John Tuttle. I supply
some of the gears and a few pieces of the hardware for professional
restorers, such as the Seeburg brass rewind gear.

The Seeburg company to my knowledge never produced a technical document
that explained how to tube any of their instruments. They furnished
some tracker bar scales which can be found on the Mechanical Music Digest
web site, I think. If not they will be posted shortly. Specific
questions can probably be answered with a posting of the question to
the Mechanical Music Digest.

For some general information about Seeburg and many other coin operated
pianos the "Encyclopedia of Automatic Instruments", by Q. David Bowers,
is a must-own book that Amazon.com sells. "The Golden Age of Automatic
Musical Instruments", by Arthur A. Reblitz" is another excellent
reference book as it contains the tracker bar scales of most of the
American-made coin-operated player pianos. The book is available on
the net from http://www.mechanicalmusicpress.com/rbook/scales.htm
which by the way has a lot of other interesting information on the site
about automatic musical instruments.

There are also some past postings in the Mechanical Music Digest
Archives concerning the Seeburg E.
