I did not attend the recent auction in Atlanta, Georgia, and I was
in hopes that those that did attend would give a report on the
instruments that sold of interest to the MMD group. I talked with
two of the attendees and both gave reports that I think should be
passed on to the MMD group. In short, most of the nickelodeons were
somewhat put together with parts from other pianos.
The spool frames and other parts in the most of the pianos were
incorrect. The drums in the Nelson-Wiggen were a red sparkle finish
which, to my knowledge, Nelson-Wiggen never used in the good ole days.
The Seeburg E looked great in the picture but was covered with thin
plywood and painted black, with the xylophone made of oak bars.
The one Empress Electric was bought by a lady who asked one of the
MMDer's what was it she had just bought.
Most of the pianos, if not all, went to non-collectors. I would
suspect that most items at the auction were sold to people wanting
a piece of Stone Mountain History.
The above is information from two of the people I spoke with and if
anyone else was there please inform us of what you saw.
