Model B unit valve springs are a better choice for holding Ampico
model A unit valves. The original model A unit valve springs (actually
clamps) will eventually damage the unit valves. The reason: They hold
the unit valve too tightly and do not allow for expansion and
contraction during seasonal conditions. If the wood expands when the
clamp is holding the valve tightly, the result can be a slight crushing
of the unit valve itself, sometimes splitting the laminations of the
wood, and even distorting the valve seats
A much better choice is to replace these original "clamps" with Ampico
model B valve block springs, which allow for expansion and contraction.
Ampico B valve springs can be obtained from Bob Streicher, see

Keep in mind that you do not need 88 springs, as one spring holds two
unit valves in place.
