For starters, I have restored many pumper player pianos. I now have
a customer who has asked me to repair a Seeburg so it plays like it is
supposed to play. In addition to the player piano it has a set of
violin pipes, with the valve/controls looking original but the violin
pipes look to be of a recent vintage.
The piano came from Knotts Berry Farm in California and had a tag in it
-- Orange Coast Piano. The serial number is 45548. The plate has been
out and repainted, the strings and pins are new. There is an electric
vacuum motor with exhaust going to an overflow bellows and then through
a shut-off valve and on to the violin pipes. Vacuum from the motor is
tubed and connected to the overflow vacuum reserve bellows.
I believe it plays a standard "A" roll. The player worked poorly in
the customer's home but now in my shop the vacuum pump runs fine but it
seems no vacuum is getting to upper stack and notes do not play. I'm
suspecting there is a shut-off control to keep the piano from playing
in rewind and maybe this control is improperly keeping vacuum from
reaching upper stack during play mode.
I believe the holes in the tracker bar control the following:
1- Soft, 2- Sustain, 3- Play (Shifts piano into play mode after
rewind), 4-61 Plays notes, 62- Violin pipes, 63- Rewind, 64-Rinky-Tink,
65- Shut-off.
Before exploring and tearing things apart, I would like to find an
illustrated publication or other assistance identifying the various
pouch/valve controls that operate from tracker bar holes 1, 2, 3,
62, 63, 64 and 65. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.
