Dear Mr. Hunter, Dave Morecraft supplied me with the answer to your
question about the Clyde Beatty - Cole Bros. Circus Calliope. Dave is
a calliope builder and restorer from Peru, Indiana. I know him from
my connection to the Delta Queen steamboat. Dave was an employee on
the Delta Queen before the company went out of business last year.
Here is what he has to say about the Clyde Beatty calliope.
"It's at the Circus World Museum, Baraboo, Wisconsin, and is known
as the "America Steam Calliope", named for the wagon its housed in.
It has a very long history.
"It was first on the Str. Queen City, then went to the circus around
1930, was on two other shows before going to Cole Bros. Circus and
has been in three different wagons. I did a restoration on the
instrument back in 1998. There are some pix of it on our web site:

"A side note: I'm suppose to play it at the Great Circus Parade at
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this July."
I hope this helps. Maybe you will get to see the calliope in action
if you go to Milwaukee in July. I am glad to hear that the parade
is being revived. It was cancelled for a couple of years just when
I decided to go up and see it. I thought I had missed my chance.
A must for a circus enthusiast.
Sincerely,
Ted Guillaum
