"Going green" or just cheap?
As I was inspecting some old rolls, I noticed that the roll in the
box was not the one on the label. I pulled off the left flange and
noted that the paper was different part way through. I unrolled the
roll only to find an identical label at the end with a leader with
a fine wire hook imprinted at the end:
"New Era"
"Hook this end to the music roll in instrument, then wind up"
It was attached to the correct roll depicted on the box label. The
roll was manufactured by the 88-note Full Score Arrangement company.
Well, for cutting costs: no box, no spool, no flanges -- you cannot
get any cheaper than that!
It is possible to attach several scrolls together, by simply hooking
them together, and create your own medley rolls -- each selection only
contains a verse and chorus only. The paper was not of very good quality
and is quite brittle. An additional paper label affixed showing two
children seated at a grand piano states "Poppenburg's, Buffalo, N.Y."
In fine print you can read 1914. You have to be careful winding the
paper scroll up onto the existing roll. Talk about covering up your
competition!
